Collective Soul - WOW!
An excellent venue for acts of The Wallflowers' caliber is The Boston House of Blues; 2200 capacity, and three levels (open standing-room floor and two upper levels, with excellent viewing of the stage from just about anywhere). A great sounding show is ensured by the State-of-the-Art sound system, and a really good sound man (more importantly). Black Stone Cherry, a powerhouse rock band, was one of the two opening acts, with excellent vocals and a very showy drummer. Safety Suit, another highly energetic young band, was the second act. The energy and enthusiasm were contagious, although their stage show was a bit over-the-top for a "seasoned" musician and music fan like myself. Safety Suit's material was a bit more pop than Black Stone Cherry's, and there was use of pre-recorded or sequenced parts, which I don't care for. However, I think this band has some very catchy tunes and will eventually headline larger shows than this one at the House of Blues. WOW! The Wallflowers - This is a band whose experience and maturity shows. The musicianship is incredible, and the songs are all hummable and singable (the audience sang along with several, reciting all the lyrics!). They let the music do the talking, and it has a lot to say. They know when to bring it down and let the audience take it, which makes the concert-goers feel included in the action. Great Show! I would see them again and recommend this band, live and on CD, to all fans of quality rock music.
